Ekatvam, or Oneness, is the realization that we are woven together through our hearts and consciousness. Religions may be many, but truth is one. Our true yearning for union with the Divine deep within and without us was the seed from which all religious traditions grew. It may come as no surprise then, that careful examination of the scriptures will uncover the principle of union and Oneness in all of them. The Bhagavad Gita (6:31) and the Srimad Bhagavatam (3:29:11-13) provide many definitions for the consciousness called Oneness including the word Ekatvam which is defined as "in Oneness with the Divine consciousness," or as the Lord said "remaining always in Me." The Biblical texts begin with the explanation that "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him…" (Gen 1:27) The omnipresent creator gathered some of his own infinite fabric to form the folds that reflect Himself as us. And in that single Divine fabric we remain, whether we perceive our Oneness or not.
More recently, keen insights into the human condition have been gained in the sciences as well. As many great minds approach a unified string theory for the quantum mechanics of our Universe, they are sounding more and more like the sages of the past as they too rediscover our Oneness. They have uncovered this same truth that not only is our consciousness connected, but our physical beings are as well. It's becoming apparent that our outer bodies are actually layers of consciousness woven into a common consciousness that is shared by all. We are the self and the all at the same time… and that all is only the self.
Is it any wonder then that we suffer when others feel pain? We don't just see suffering or watch celebration, we feel it as if it were our own… because it is. Rooted in Oneness, the feelings of one of us can be felt by all.
It has been said that in this age, as we face the karmas and consequences of our past, the planet has an opportunity to choose to come together in harmony to confront them. Or we can continue clinging to the failures born from past illusions that we are separate. For us to experience this shift to an awareness our Oneness, we must each of us heal in our understanding. Our anger, our hatred, and our bullets are all poisons we're drinking ourselves.
The Ekatvam Foundation was founded by Amma and Swami as a place where all faiths could come together to engage, with support and dedication, the spirit and the practice of Oneness in each and every being.
Life's song of Oneness plays to each of us till we hear its music and join in with our own unique note, that together we create one beautiful harmony. This is the dance of life. This is Ekatvam. What does Oneness mean to you? This river is thirsty for your rain, please share with us...
